KENTS TIPS
People on statin drugs have lower levels of coenzyme Q10.
Coenzyme Q10 is important for mitochondrial function
High energy cells such as muscle (heart_ and brain) have higher numbers of mitochondria
Here, at NutriChem, we sell a pure, standardized source of Coenzyme Q10.
What is important is whether you need it or not. Coenzyme Q10 is a
natural substance that is found in every cell of your body. What it
does is acts like a spark plug, facilitating the production of energy.
Now, some people have low levels of coenzyme Q10 due to age or
genetics - they can't make it well.
Diet can affect coenzyme Q10 levels. - vegetarians may be low in coenzyme Q10,
Drug interactions - the Statin group of anticholesterol agents interfere with the body's production of coenzyme Q10.
People supplement with coenzyme Q10 based on studies which show
benefits in cardiovascular disease, cancer and in Parkinsons disease.
If you consider supplementing with coenzyme Q10, there has been no significant adverse reactions.
Here at NutriChem, we assess the need for coenzyme Q10 through blood tests or consultation with one of our Health Counsellors.
CoEnzyme Q10, also known as ubiquinone, is a naturally-occurring,
fat-soluble chemical found throughout the body. In particular, its
highest concentrations are found in heart and liver tissue as well as
inside immune cells, where energy production is key.
As we age, our ability to produce CoEnzyme Q10 decreases, which can
lead to noticeable lower energy levels and a lack of well-being. This
is because CoEnzyme Q10 is so vital in the chain of reactions which
make ATP (an energy-producing compound) within each cell. At the same
time, CoEnzyme Q10 acts as an antioxidant, neutralizing fat-soluble,
damaging free-radicals. Since food is not a significant source of
CoEnzyme Q10, supplements may be the best way to ensure adequate stores
for optimal health.
Cardiovascular Benefits
Patients taking cholesterol-lowering drugs or beta-blockers should be
aware that these drugs may inhibit their ability to synthesize or
utilize CoEnzyme Q10.
Multiple human studies have shown that individuals with cardiovascular
diseases such as compromised circulation, angina, congestive heart
failure, arrythmia and cholesterol imbalances can benefit significantly
from CoEnzyme Q10 use. In a 1998 study, researchers administered a
daily dose of 120mg of CoEnzyme Q10 to cardiac patients for 28 days.
Impressively, these patients experienced a two- to threefold reduction
(compared to placebo) in severe chest pain and heart arrythmia, as well
as improvements in heart function. A reduction in subsequent
heart-attack deaths and in nonfatal heart attacks was also achieved.
In addition, markers of oxidative stress were reduced in the CoEnzyme
Q10 group, and levels of antioxidant vitamins A, C and E increased.
Obviously then, CoEnzyme Q10 may offer significant cardiac protection
with CoEnzyme Q10 supplementation[1].
Oral Health Benefits
Individuals with periodontal disease (gum disease), may benefit
significantly from CoEnzyme Q10 supplementation. The disease has been
linked to CoEnzyme Q10 deficiency in gingivial tissue[2]. This is
logical because healing and repair of gum tissue requires efficient
energy production, a metabolic function dependent on an adequate supply
of CoEnzyme Q10.
Immune System Benefits
Several studies have documented an immune-enhancing effect of CoEnzyme
Q10 and improvements in breast cancer patients[3][4]. After all, the
immune system is another highly energy-dependent system, requiring
larger amounts of CoEnzyme Q10. In addition, individuals with chronic
fatigue syndrome and other sufferers of auto-immune disorders may also
benefit from CoEnzyme Q10's ability to improve cellular energy
production.
Neurological Benefits
In 2002, a study demonstrated that CoEnzyme Q10 in daily doses of 600mg
and greater appears to slow the progressive deterioration of function
in Parkinson?s Disease, with no apparent side effects[5]. This is
promising news for an aging population interested in alternatives to
prescription medications.

We are strong advocates of the classic patient-physician relationship especially with respect to prescriptions. Any patient that requires a prescription must have a face to face interaction with their physician. FDA's general position: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law. If a woman must take hormone replacement therapy to ease the symptoms of menopause she should take the lowest possible dose for the shortest amount of time.
