The MSB Plus base formula combines vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and enzymes with a special emphasis on antioxidants.  Antioxidants help to enhance your child’s immune system and help protect against oxidative stress. Immune system dysfunction and oxidative stress are two classic characteristics of Down syndrome. Since gastro-intestinal problems are more common in children with Down syndrome, the MSB Plus base formula also contains the most metabolically active form of nutrients, to provide the best bioavailability for your child.

MSB Plus also contains unique ingredients, not found in other formulas that help to improve behavior and mental alertness. These ingredients help support the production of acetylcholine an essential neurotransmitter, important for brain function. Acetylcholine has been shown to be insufficient in people with Down syndrome (1).

Phosphatidyl Serine (25 mg per serving)
Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a fat that is essential for cell function in all parts of the body, particularly in the brain. Dietary sources of PS are limited. Double blind clinical trials with PS have shown improvements in memory, mood, concentration, and verbal ability (2). Scientific studies demonstrate that PS restores the brain’s supply and output of acetylcholine.

Over the past two decades extensive medical literature has appeared, describing the important role of lecithin for brain function. Recent research revealed, that the beneficial active component of lecithin is phosphatidylserine  an essential constituent of neuronal membranes, and a basic requirement to maintain vital energy production of the mitochondria (3).

Choline Dihydrogen Citrate (81.25 mg per serving)
Choline is used to improve the levels of acetylcholine. Research has clearly linked choline to improved cardiovascular health, brain development, learning and memory. Children administered with choline have shown improvements to verbal and visual memory (4).

DMAE (25 mg per serving)
Dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE)is a chemical naturally produced in the human brain. It is thought to be used by the body to convert choline to acetylcholine. DMAE increases the concentration of choline in the bloodstream because it enhances the rate at which free choline enters the bloodstream from tissue. It also increases the levels of choline in the brain due to its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier. Studies show that DMAE increases alertness, improves behavior and mental function in children with Down syndrome, and improves learning and memory.(5)

Grape Seed Extract (6.25 mg per serving)
Grape Seed Extract has antioxidant properties that help protect against oxidative stress. Perry et al (6,7) showed increased levels of oxidative stress in the brains of Down syndrome individuals with Alzheimer’s disease. Studies suggest that grape seed derived polyphenolics may be useful agents to prevent or treat Alzheimer’s disease.(8)



What research has NutriChem done in Down syndrome?

NutriChem enlisted the services of Dr. Marie Peeters-Ney to independently study the effects of MSBPlus on children with Down syndrome. Dr. Peeters-Ney has worked with Dr Jerome Lejuene (discoverer of the cause of Down Syndrome) on research of amino acid deficiencies in this genetic disorder linked to certain genes on the 21st chromosome. The study focused on biological, developmental and immune issues before and after treatment with MSBPlus. Dr. Peeters-Ney’s research concluded that the use of MSBPlus resulted in a 50% reduction of infections and a 65% increase in overall health of children with Down Syndrome (9).

In the first ever in vivo (or living) study, on oxidative stress in individuals with Down syndrome, the International Center for Metabolic testing laboratory (ICMT) examined 166 Down syndrome individuals and their siblings as controls.(10 )Blood and urine analysis showed increased levels of oxidative stress in individuals with Down syndrome, and decreased levels of antioxidants and glutathione.

Because each child is unique, a customized formula can be made using laboratory test results to match your child’s unique nutritional needs.

Our biochemists recommend families start using MSB Plus first before having a formula customized for them, but testing allows your child’s nutritional supplement to be individualized to his or her specific needs. Individualized compounds not only correct nutritional conditions, they can also remove substances to which your child is allergic, strengthen dosages of specific ingredients or remove ingredients that cause a negative reaction when taken in combination with other medications your child may be taking.

We can consult with you on existing test results from your child’s health practitioner or another lab to find natural solutions to support optimal health. Analysis of the laboratory test results involves not just identifying a deficiency, but why a deficiency or abnormality exists. Nutrients are not like drugs – they do not act in isolation, so it is vital that not only a deficiency or excess be identified, but also their impact on other biochemical pathways must be considered.
