Cardiovascular Health What is Blood pressure- high (hypertension) ?
Your blood pressure is a measure of the pressure or force of the blood against the walls of your blood vessels. If this is too high or low it can have dangerous and long-term effects on your health. High blood pressure is defined as an average systolic pressure above 140 mm Hg and a diastolic blood pressure above 90 mm Hg or both. High blood pressure can increase your risk of heart disease and stroke.
Because high blood pressure usually causes no symptoms until complications develop, it is know as the “silent killer”. Warning signs usually associated with high blood pressure include headaches, rapid pulse, and shortness of breath, dizziness and visual disturbances.
Magnesium and Hypertension
Adults with higher dietary intakes of magnesium have a lower risk of developing high blood pressure (3-4). Diets rich in magnesium are routinely prescribed to people with hypertension (5).
