Scientific Background
Co Q10 is an enzyme that is present in
each cell of every living thing. It is essential to cells - ability to
manufacture adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP), which supplies energy. Since
the discovery of this potent antioxidant in 1957, ongoing research has
demonstrated its role in boosting energy and reducing the risk of
developing age related diseases. Co Q10 is found in small amounts in
many foods, including beef, sardines, and broccoli, but it is destroyed
by cooking. When we're young our bodies manufacture a significant
amount of Co Q10, but this production declines with age. Research shows
that individuals with heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, and/or
hypertension often have low Co Q10 levels, and that Co Q10 supplements
can help to alleviate symptoms and improve health.
How it Helps
Heart health
Numerous
studies have shown that patients with various heart problems can
benefit by taking 100 to 200 mg daily of Co Q10. Heart disease is rated
by classes, from Class I (mild) to Class IV (severe). In a study of
over 400 patients with heart problems ranging from arrhythmia to
ischemic heart failure, participants exhibited such notable
improvements in chest pain, fatigue, and palpitations over an average
of 18 months that almost 60 percent of patients improved by one class,
that almost 30 percent improved by two classes, and that many were able
to decrease their heart medications. In a study of over 600 patients
with congestive heart failure (CHF), participants received either Co
Q10 (about 1 mg per pound of body weight) or placebo daily for 12
months. After a year of steady improvements in the Co Q10 group,
researchers predicted that daily Co Q10 could reduce the rate of
hospital admissions for CHF by 20 percent.
Heart surgery
In
patients undergoing heart surgery, those receiving Co Q10 before and
after surgery have not only experienced better heart function
post-operatively than those receiving placebo, but have recovered from
surgery more quickly and with fewer complications.
Reducing adverse effects of statin drugs
Statin
drugs (eg, Atorvastatin, Simvastatin) are given to atherosclerosis
patients to reduce cholesterol levels. However, they deplete Co Q10
levels, causing symptoms such as severe muscle fatigue. Over time,
statin use can increase the risk of myopathy (muscle weakness,
especially of the heart). However, studies are increasingly showing
that these adverse effects can be overcome by taking Co Q10 supplements
along with statin drugs.
Metabolic syndrome
Metabolic
syndrome (also known as Syndrome X) includes hypertension, high
cholesterol, obesity, and diabetes. These problems often occur together
and greatly increase the risk of heart disease. Recent research has
shown that in addition to supporting heart health, Co Q10 can help to
reduce blood pressure, lower cholesterol, strengthen arteries, and
support blood sugar control in people with Type 2 diabetes.
Other Important Points about SISU Co Q10
- SISU Co Q10 is produced from natural vegetable sources, including sugar beets, using a proprietary fermentation process.
- SISU
also distributes Co Q10 Soft Gels in 30 and 60 mg dosages to be taken
preventively by those at risk of heart disease, as well as Co Q10 Extra
(with flax oil and Vitamin E).
- Vegetarians and vegans
should look for SISU CoQ10 in vegetarian capsules. As this is supplied
in dry form, the vegetarian capsules should be taken with a meal
containing fat to optimize absorption.
- For individuals who are at risk of developing or who have Parkinson's disease, SISU distributes Co Q10 at high doses (400 mg).
- Many
individuals taking Co Q10 for its antioxidant and heart health
properties experience significant improvement in their periodontal
health (such as improvement of gum disease.)
- Other
studies have suggested that the ability of Co Q10 to increase available
energy at a cellular level may support immune health and enhance
athletic performance.
- It is difficult to imagine anyone
with a history of heart disease who could not benefit by taking at
least 100mg to 300mg of Co Q10 daily.
