General Health What is a Duodenal Ulcer?
Peptic ulcers are open sores or erosions in the lining of either the duodenum (duodenal ulcers) or the stomach (gastric ulcers). The duodenum is the upper part of the small intestine that produces gastric juices (along with the stomach) that help us to break down food. If the protective coating of our stomach or duodenum is weakened, digestive juices can damage the lining below, resulting in an ulcer.
Some of the causes of ulcers are:
Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) a bacterial organism that can live on the lining of the stomach and small intestine, where it can damage the lining and mucous layer 1. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), poor diet, heavy use of alcohol, chronic stress and coffee drinking are some other factors that can lead to an ulcer.
