What is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)?

GERD is a disorder in which contents of the stomach or small intestine (foods and acid) repeatedly move back into the esophagus. Normally the esophageal sphincter muscles (between throat and stomach) closes after we finish eating. This prevents food and acids from surging out of the stomach and refluxing into the esophageal tube. If this happens constantly it can lead to inflammation, scaring and even esophageal cancer can occur.
