General Health What are Gallbladder Disorders?
The Gallbladder is an organ located under the liver that is responsible for storing the bile produced by the liver. Bile aids in digestion and absorption of fats and the absorption of fat-soluble nutrients. It also neutralizes any excess stomach acid before entering the ileum (the final section of the small intestine), and helps with the elimination of drugs and other compounds. Because of all of its functions a dysfunction in bile production and secretion can result in many different health problems.1
Gallstones are a result of bile becoming saturated with cholesterol, bile acids and phospholipids. Sometimes the gallstones can lodge in the bile duct, causing nausea, vomiting and pain in the upper right abdominal area.
