General Health Hair Loss
Everyday we lose a certain amount of hair as part of our body’s renewal process. If we start to go bald or lose an excessive amount of hair it is referred to as alopecia.
Alopecia totalis- loss of all the scalp hair
Alopecia universalis-loss of all head and body hair
Alopecia areata-hair falls out in patches
Androgenic alopecia- or Male Pattern Baldness
Genetics and hormones determine the most common reason for hair loss. In men a increase in dihydrotestosterone (DHT) with the hair follicle can cause the follicle to degrade and shorten the growth phase. 1 Women sometimes experience hair loss due to hormonal changes after menopause and after pregnancy. Some menopausal women find improvement with the use of natural progesterone, for excessive hair loss.2
Other factors that can cause alopecia are physical damage to hair shaft, poor circulation, thyroid disease, stress, various autoimmune diseases, fungal infections, iron deficiency (especially in women) and vitamin deficiencies.
