Ultrasound Bone Density Test |
Sahara Ultrasound Bone Density Test
There are several ways to measure bone density, most of which involve the use of x-ray radiation. X-ray based methods usually take a bone density measurement of your hip, spine, forearm or heel. Sahara uses ultrasound to estimate the bone density of your heel. The heel bone contains a high percentage of the kind of bone most affected by osteoporosis.
Your chances of developing osteoporosis are greater if you are female and answer, “yes” to any of the following questions:
Light skinned
Thin or small framed
Approaching or past menopause
Low Calcium intake
A cigarette smoker or drink alcohol in excess
A family history of osteoporosis
Chronic intestinal disorders
A sedentary lifestyle
Ultrasound is a safe, radiation-free technology. The entire procedure takes about one minute. Following the test you will receive a 15 min consultation with one of our Nutritionists to go over the results and make recommendations based on these results. You will receive a printout that helps you determine, along with your physician, your risk of developing osteoporosis and future fracture. To ensure best results please follow the pre-test guidelines.
Cost: $35
Peripheral bone density scans of the heel are not necessarily representative of other parts of the body. Research does show that there is a very strong correlation between heel measurements and hip/spine measurements, however the correlation is not absolute. Many experts recommend that individuals testing with a SAHARA T-score below (0) be referred to a physician for a central DEXA scan of the hip and spine.
*Osteoporosis Canada recommends that
individuals who receive ultrasound results indicating low bone density talk to
their physicians about having a BMD test.
