Tyrosine is a nonessential amino acid that is involved in protein synthesis as well as a precursor for the synthesis of the catecholamines epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine, the thyroid hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine, and the pigment melonin. Because it is a precursor in the synthesis of the neurotransmitters norepinephrine and dopamine, tyrosine acts as a mood elevator and may be helpful against chronic fatigue, anxiety, depression and headaches.

5 HTP is a substance that is created naturally in the body from the amino acid tryptophan. As a supplement, 5HTP is obtained from the seeds of an African plant called Griffonia simplicifolia.
