KENTS TIPS

  • Vitamin E should be used at about 200iu daily or levels should be tested
  • Vitamin E works in conjunction with other anti-oxidants
  • Use only d-alpha tocopherol

Vitamin E is a fat soluble anti-oxidant. What it does is protects fats and oils from oxidizing or going rancid. This is important because every cell in our body relies on fats and oils for their intimate functions. If you add Vitamin E to any oil, it would keep it from oxidizing or going rancid. If you put Vitamin E in a piece of fish, for example, it actually would stay fresher longer. Now, this basic function of Vitamin E is why it's so useful in so many conditions ,in so many organs from cataracts and cancer prevention to hormone and mood balance, heart function, immune system, wound healing and many, many more.

At NutriChem we recommend 200 units of Vitamin E daily or 400 units every other day. At NutriChem labs we actually measure blood levels of Vitamin E and this way we can prevent deficiency and optimize our Vitamin E recommendations.

Vitamin E is found in two forms. The good form is natural Vitamin E and the one that is poorer is synthetic.

You can tell the difference because natural Vitamin E is "d" Alpha Tocopherol not the "dl" Alpha tocopherol found in the synthetic. The "l" makes the vitamin E less valuable to the body. Please come in to NutriChem to discuss your Vitamin E requirements either through supplementation or through blood work with me, Kent MacLeod your Clinical Pharmacist or one of our Health Counsellors.

Vitamin E is also known as tocopherol(s), a family of 8 similar fat-soluble vitamins.  D-alpha tocopherol is the most commonly available form; other tocopherols include beta-, delta- and gamma-tocopherol, as well as the tocotrienols.  NutriChem Vitamin E is naturally-sourced d-alpha tocopherol, the form on which most vitamin E research has been conducted.

Why take Vitamin E?
The functions and benefits of vitamin E are vast; however, its antioxidant powers make it especially attractive.  As an antioxidant, vitamin E is able to neutralize free radicals, unstable molecules capable of cellular damage.  This provides us with some protection against fat-soluble chemicals in the air we breathe and food we eat.  Vitamin E prevents vitamins A and C from oxidation, allowing them to function longer.  It magnifies the antioxidant power of the mineral selenium, creating a powerful duo in the fight against free radical damage.  In this way vitamin E has the potential to protect tissues from accelerated aging.  Vitamin E is also known for its importance in wound-healing.

Who Benefits from Vitamin E?
Since vitamin E is an anti-coagulant (blood-thinning) substance, individuals with heightened cardiovascular risks (which includes women on oral contraceptives), high blood pressure and angina may benefit from supplementation.  The Physicians Health Study of over 22,000 male doctors found that individuals who took a vitamin E supplement of 100 IU or greater experienced a 40 percent reduction in heart attacks, as determined by unchanging blood cholesterol levels in these men.  Other health conditions which may benefit from vitamin E supplementation include discoid lupus erythematosus, Parkinson's disease, cancer, fibrocystic breast disease, premenstrual syndrome and prostate problems.  In addition, those consuming a diet high in processed vegetable oils are wise to take a vitamin E supplement because these polyunsaturated oils are stripped of their natural vitamin E and therefore have higher potential for cellular damage.  Any individual wishing to minimize the potential damage of environmental pollutants in our air, food and water may use vitamin E for added protection.  For example, vitamin E helps our bodies detoxify mercury, dry-cleaning fluid, benzene, lead, ozone and nitrates/nitrites.1

Naturally Sourced
To ensure maximum effectiveness, NutriChem Vitamin E is naturally-sourced from soybean oil.  Natural vitamin E (d-alpha tocopherol) is at least twice as effective as synthetic vitamin E (dl-alpha tocopherol).2

Free of Common Allergens
NutriChem Vitamin E contains no wheat, yeast, dairy, sugar or gluten, making it safe for those with sensitivities or allergies to these substances.  However, individuals with soy sensitivities may wish to refrain from taking this product.

We are strong advocates of the classic patient-physician relationship  especially with respect to prescriptions. Any patient that requires a prescription must have a face to face interaction with their physician. FDA's general position: The FDA, due to the current state of their regulations, has taken the position that virtually all shipments of prescription drugs imported from a Canadian pharmacy by a U.S. consumer will violate the law.   If a woman must take hormone replacement therapy to ease the symptoms of menopause she should take the lowest possible dose for the shortest amount of time.
