Women`s Health What is Hypothyroidism?
Hypothyroidism is caused by an underproduction of the thyroid hormone, produced by the thyroid gland. Some symptoms of hypothyroidism are fatigue, low body temperature, cold hands and feet, weight gain, memory loss, hair loss, hair that is dry and brittle, headaches, irritability and depression.
The evaluation of hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) requires blood tests as well as temperature records. Conventional medical test are not as reliable and some people end up suffering with mild or subclinically low thyroid function. If you suspect hypothyroidism you can do a thyroid basal temperature test at home.
BASAL TEMPERATURE FOR THYROID TESTING
Instructions
1/ Purchase a basal thermometer, available at drugstores. Most basal thermometers come with a temperature plotting chart to log your results.
2/ Shake the thermometer down before going to bed to 96 degrees or less and put it by your bedside.
3/ As soon as you wake up in the morning, before you get out of bed, place the thermometer deep in your armpit for ten minutes and record the temperature. This measures your lowest temperature of the day, which correlates with thyroid gland function. This temperature should be taken for four days. The normal temperature averages 97.6-98.2 degrees F. An average reading below 97.6 may indicate hypothyroidism and you should discuss your findings with your Health Care Provider.
4/ Make sure you take your temperature at the same time every day. For women, the temperature should be taken starting the second day of menstruation. For men, and for postmenopausal women, it makes no difference when the temperatures are taken.
