Women`s Health
What is Menopause?
Menopause is a normal physiological process, marking a transition in a women's life. Menopause reflects the end of a women’s reproductive ability, usually around age 50. In years leading up to menopause, the ovaries become less functional and produce lower amounts of estrogen and progesterone. This can result in hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, vaginal dryness, and insomnia. Alleviating these unpleasant symptoms can make the transition easier and improve quality of life. As life expectancy increases, the menopausal and postmenopausal periods are becoming very significant in a woman’s life. Current medical opinion regards menopause as an age-related disease that needs to be treated with hormone replacement therapy. But, if you elect not to take conventional therapy, there are many complementary therapies available to help alleviate the most bothersome symptoms, as well as help reduce the risk of diseases associated with menopause. Even though many women experience the same symptoms, the origin of these symptoms may be completely different.
For example: a hot flash, insomnia, low energy, mood swings can be the result of:
Hormonal Imbalance
Adrenal Imbalance
Neurotransmitter Imbalance
Nutrient Imbalance
Gastrointestinal Imbalance
The origin can be any or all of these underlying causes.
Magnesium Supplements and Menopause
Magnesium levels drop as estrogen levels diminish during menopause. It
has been suggested by several authors that magnesium may be beneficial
to alleviate hot flashes, and help maintain bone and cardiovascular
health (1-3). We have anecdotal evidence in our clinic of its
usefulness to improve hot flashes. Furthermore, inadequate magnesium
intake in postmenopausal women has been shown to impair glucose
tolerance, induce heart rhythm changes, and adversely affect the
metabolism of other nutrients, including calcium, phosphorus, and
potassium (4-5).
