Zinc is an essential trace mineral, a metal which is naturally-occurring in animal, vegetable and mineral substances. After iron, zinc is the most common mineral in the body and is found in every cell. Zinc is a component of over 20 enzymes responsible for vital chemical reactions in the body. It is required for synthesis of new proteins, such as collagen, hormones, antibodies and enzymes. As a component of insulin, zinc is required for blood sugar metabolism. Zinc is also needed for a healthy immune system, growth, reproduction, taste, vision, blood clotting and proper thyroid function.
