Lycopene is a member of the carotenoid family of antioxidants, most commonly found in tomatoes. The chemical structure of lycopene is similar to that of beta-carotene but it is a more powerful antioxidant, capable of quenching certain types of free radicals at a rate three times greater than beta-carotene. Scientists believe that lycopene possesses anti-atherosclerosis and anti-carcinogenic properties. According to a recent scientific review, there were 35 clinical studies that identified 'significant inverse associations' between blood lycopene levels and various types of cancer, most notably those of the prostate, lung and stomach.
